Chapter Two

Now that we've read chapter two, do you have anything further to add to your assessment of Tom?

Also, from the historical perspective, are you able to see any influences in the story? How do those play into the piece?

  1. Tom almost seems like he is a bully in the story. For instance when Myrtle kept repeating Daisy's name, he forcefully open handedly hit her in the face to make her stop, but the alcohol might have been a foggy perspective as to what he did.

  3. Tom is also very abusive as we had seen in this chapter, when he had hit Mytrtle. One would believe that time the novel was written has plenty to do with the fact that abuse was taken lightly, during this time period.

  4. i agree with anammahar but i still think hitting a woman is horrible even if it did happen more often in this time period. when i read this my opinion on tom dropped even lower than it already was... which is pretty low.. and it didnt help that nick just left afterwards.

  5. Tom doesn't seem to have very good anger management. It makes one wonder about his past and how that might have had an effect on the way Tom is so aggresive in the present day of the story. Along with what Anam said, the abuse referenced to in the novel is severe and nowadays would reult in a police report. Back then, though, the abuse was seen as a brush off the shoulder. You took it like a man and jsut let it go. Things like this the drinking and atmosphere suggest references to the time period.

  6. Tom seems to be a violent person, even though it doesnt come right out and say it. It tells as if he is abusive. He isnt physically abusing Daisy, but he is emotionally abusive. He doesnt care about her at all and he treats her with such disrespect. Tom also comes off as selfish. Tom can do whatever he wants to do, but Daisy cant.
