Chapter One

Now that we have all read pages 1-26, what do we know about Tom Buchanan? How do we know these things about him? Consider his actions, things he says, etc.

  1. We know Tom isn't a very positive character. When Tom goes to take the phone call that was for him, Jordan Baker tells Nick that Tom has "a woman in New York". Tom having an affair with another woman when he's already married to Daisy doesn't really give a good first impression and this is how we know his character is negative.

  2. The narrator describes Tom as giving off an "impression of fractiousness" (which I looked up and found it means irritable) I'm pretty sure that this would add to the idea that he is viewed as negative. Due to the fact that he is already a big muscular guy, I don't think that anyone would want to object to anything he says. lol

  3. i agree with both of these because all we know about him is that he was a football star in college and he is cheating on his wife for someone in NY. In my opinion he has passed the good years of his life and he is just trying to find anything in his life that will give him a thrill like the one he had when he was a football star. This could go anywhere from cheating on his wife to jumping from house to house even if he did say he wanted to stay in his current house.

  4. As the reader of TGG, we only know the few details of Tom, and how he relates in the story. He is described as almost self obsessed and very into himself; in turn not caring how his wife Daisy feels about the affair he is having in New York with another woman. Tom states several comments and statements that show his ego to be very macho. When he talks about reading 'The Rise of Colored Empires' and about the white racial race and how it is all scientific, and then Daisy says "he readsdeep books with long words in them. What was that word we --"

  5. Contined---
Tom is percieved to have two different sides to him. One that is serious and not very caring when he is in West Egg, and the other very open and risk taker with the woman in New York. He is almost as blunt as a grey rainy day.

  6. In just the few short pages we have read we have found out that Tom B. is an errogent, rude, and coniving person. Clearly his feelings fo rhis wife Daisy are slim, due to the face that he is having an affair with a woman in New York City. If he is acting this way this far in the book, I dont think his personality will change throughout the rest of the story.

  7. Tom is put off as an arrogant man without a care for anyone but himself. Tom not caring what others let alone what Daisy thinks of his affair shows he only values himself. He has a negative outlook on life and appears to be a negative person. Tom seems stuck on trying to re-live the high lights of his younger life by moving place to place and living a more adventure style type of life. Like his attitude when he is around Daisy and his attitude around his mistress. Both are complete opposites. Overall, Tom is not everyone’s favorite person due to his attitude and the choices of his life.

  8. So far in the book, we have earned that Tom is a very arrogant person who doesn't care what everyone else thinks. He is very open about his affair and shows that he only values himself. It seems that tom is trying to re-live his younger life. Overall Tom is that last person anyone wants to be around.

  9. After reading pages 1-26, we learn that Tom Buchanan is having an affair with a woman in New York. We learn this from Jordan Baker. One would believe Tom is self centered.

  10. Tom only cares about himself, and he obviously doesnt have a care in the world for daisy. Its one thing that hes cheating on daisy, but its another thing that he doesnt even try to cover it up. This shows that hes an ignorant person.

  11. As far as the first couple of pages, tom has been portrayed as an uncaring man towards his wife and women in general. If this early he is already shown cheating on his, what we assume to be faithful, wife, then he is not a very trustworthy or sincere man. He is also highstrong and somewhat overbearing at moments with the stmosphere he presents.
